Zopiclone is a hypnotic agent that is part of the cyclopyrrolone compounds. It quickly initiates and maintains sleep without reducing total REM sleep and preserving slow-wave sleep. Negligible residual effects are observed the next morning. Its pharmacological properties include hypnotic, sedative, anxiolytic, anticonvulsant and muscle relaxant actions. These are linked to its high affinity and its specific agonist effect on the central receptors belonging to the macromolecular complex modulating the opening of chloride channels. However, zopiclone and other cyclopyrrolones have been shown to act at a different site than benzodiazepines, including different conformational changes in the receptor complex.
